A historic milestone was achieved this past weekend as the Canberra Bach Ensemble performed at the Leipzig Bach Festival, becoming the first Australian ensemble to receive an invitation to this internationally esteemed event. Established in 1904, the Leipzig Bach Festival attracts renowned artists and tens of thousands of visitors to "Bach’s City," celebrating the timeless reverence for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. This significant accomplishment was marked by the performance at the St Peters Church on Saturday 8th June 2024, which received a standing ovation.
The ANU School of Music was proudly represented by Artistic Director and Conductor Andrew Koll (Alumnus), Concertmaster Stephen Freeman (Alumnus), flautist Jennifer Brian (PhD candidate), bassoonist Ben Hoadley (Faculty bassoon and chamber music teacher), violist Iska Sampson (Community Music staff), ensemble manager and chorister Jaki Kane (Alumna and former staff member), classical singer Jade mcfaul (Alumna), violinist Tanya Boag (Honours student), cellist Gabriel Frømyhr (Honours student), violinist Lauren Davis (PhD Alumna), chorister Peter Campbell (former staff member) and chorister Martin Magill (student).
Reflecting on the experience, Jennifer Brian shared, "Sometimes dreams do come true. Thank you Canberra Bach Ensemble and Leipzig Bach Festival, I am truly grateful."
